History

The ancient kingdom of Momomotapa is the inspiration behind the monumental architecture of the Legend Golf & Safari Resort.

The kingdom covered an area of what is known today as Zimbabwe, the Kalahari, Mozambique and vast areas of South Africa. It was a culture grown rich from distant trading links most powerfully demonstrated in the gold rhinoceros – the artefact symbolising royal power.
Its first capital at Mapungubwe gave way to a second known now as the Great Zimbabwe ruins – and now Legend Golf & Safari Resort has created a mythical third capital – witnessed in the great red walls of the Gatehouse – archaeologically and architecturally true to the spirit of the Monomotapan style.
Monomotapa was a vast and sophisticated African Empire built on the trade between the goldfields of southern Africa and the Indian Ocean. The artefacts from the period are some of the finest in archaeological finds in southern Africa.
Now the spirit of global trade of Monomotapa is reborn at Legend Golf & Safari Resort as travellers from across the world once again are made to wonder at the beauty of the African continent and its great potential to inspire.
